How we started
Behind Clean air initiative

Harris Ashangwa
Founder
Clean Air Initiative Cameroon was founded by Harrison Ashangwa, an environmental engineer whose personal experience with air pollution turned into a lifelong commitment to clean air and environmental justice. Growing up in Douala and Bamenda, Harrison saw firsthand how pollution disproportionately affects vulnerable communities. When a close relative passed away from asthma triggered by poor air quality, it sparked a deeper awareness — and a mission.
In 2022, he launched CAIC to address the urgent need for data, advocacy, and citizen engagement around air pollution in Cameroonian cities. Today, the organization leads work in community air quality monitoring, youth training, and policy advocacy, using science and civic action to push for sustainable urban change.
Beyond CAIC, Harrison serves as Executive Director of the International Student Environmental Coalition, where he supports youth-led climate programs in over 30 countries. A globally recognized fellow of the North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE), the International Sustainability Academy, UMI Fund and the AU-EU Youth Voices Lab, Harrison continues to build a future where every community can breathe clean, safe air — and every young person is empowered to protect it
Our Mission

Our Vision
Clean Air Initiative Cameroon envisions a future where every citizen breathes clean air and enjoys vibrant, sustainable communities across the nation. We strive for a Cameroon where air pollution is significantly reduced, and the transportation sector operates sustainably, contributing to a healthier environment and improved quality of life for all
